Chef Eddy Nunez on Cooking with Heart
For Chef Eddy Nunez in Eurest’s Eastern Division, his ascent to Sous Chef is especially meaningful. Since 2008, he has been a fixture in his marketplace as a grill cook. Regarded for his joyful energy and a near telepathic ability to connect with guests, Eddy is the ultimate people person.
“For many years at the grill station, people would walk in, give Eddy a look and he’d return the look. A few minutes later, they’d come back, pick up their food and talk about anything other than the food,” said Kingsley Sackey, Eurest Resident District Manager and Eddy’s supervisor. “He knew everyone’s orders just off that look – he’s so good at what he does, and I knew there were more opportunities for Eddy.”
In the spring of 2023, that opportunity presented itself as Eddy was selected as a delegate in Eurest’s Global University for Lifelong Learning (GULL) program.

GULL is a 16-week education and development program that propels career growth, helping prepare hourly associates for salaried managerial roles. During that time, Eddy took advantage of every moment to connect with others in the company and learn as much as he could.
“I remember when I was taking classes, and my supervisor was always there when I asked him questions,” explained Eddy. “GULL opens up a lot of doors for people that have more to give and talents to offer,” said Eddy.
Eddy also speaks of the support he received throughout his GULL journey, remembering a moment with the Johnson & Johnson CEO Joaquin Duato and Chief Legal Officer Liz Forminard following his graduation.
“I showed Liz the picture of the graduation, and she was so excited, she urged me to show Joaquin,” shares Eddy. “In that moment, she gave me advice: talk to your manager about your promotion, and don’t stay quiet. She was so happy for me.”
Recently, Eddy’s hard work culminated with a promotion to Sous Chef.
“While people were sad not to see Eddy behind the grill every day, once I explained why, that was celebrated by everyone,” said Kingsley.
Everyone in the building joined in to congratulate Eddy and share in his excitement.
As Eddy advances into his new role, he is taking a bi-weekly financials course as part of his continuing education.
“I tell people, keep going after the GULL program. I learned a lot and it’s pushed me to keep learning more.”
His advice and how he approaches his work serves as inspiration for all.
“I tell people: When you do something, do it with your heart, do it with love. Whether you’re making a sandwich or at the salad bar, do it with your heart.”
